NYC-Area Musicians to Check Out!
- Kiku Collins!
- This woman can blow! Amazing trumpet, flugelhorn, and valve trombone, and she sings! She's the rockstarriest horn player I know! She's SUPER KIKU!!!
- Steph Furness!
- I've known Steph since she started coming to ISOE shows as a high school student, braces and all. And now she's a singer-songwriter herself, an amazing woman, and I am so proud of her.
- Robin Renee!
- I first saw Robin in a video they showed all the freshmen at Rutgers on sexual diversity on campus. She had blue lipstick and she was singing with the Spy Gods and I thought she was the coolest woman I had ever seen! Then I actually got to know her and found out she is, in fact, the coolest woman! She calls her eclectic style Mantra-Pop. I call it fabulous. Check her out!
- Julia Brown's Web home
- Julia is an incredible NYC singer-songwriter whose CD is truly eclectic and really fine work. Color me impressed.
- Melineh Kurdian
- A fellow Kansan... though there are many other reasons to dig Melineh! Starting with her sweet, strong, literate style. Hearing her at Rockwood brought Shawn Colvin to mind, but Melineh is doing something all her own. Check 'er out!
Some of My Idols!
- A Randy Newman site
- I have been listening to Randy Newman since I was a wee child (thanks, Dad). You may only be familiar with his kid-friendly movie tunes, but check out his solo albums, which will make you cry, laugh, and occasionally even feel a little angry. One of the greatest songwriters around today.
- Patty Griffin
- Patty Griffin is one of my musical idols. She is not a gospel singer per se, but when she sings it is a religious experience. She embodies soul.
- Mavis Staples
- A voice like buttah. When she sings, you know God is listening.
- Paul Simon
- What can be said? Another great.
Amazing Touring Musicians You Must Hear!
- Lizz Wright
- You don't find too many really original jazz singers these days, and you certainly don't see many who write [amazing] songs. This woman's voice will melt your soul.
- OZOMATLI!!!!!
- Globe-trotting Afro-Latin-hip-hop-middle-eastern mashup by a group of guys who remain commited to social justice, progressive politics, and anti-war convictions. And they put on a hell of a great show. Possibly the best band performing today, IMHO.
- Jurassic 5!
- Ingenious, inventive Los Angeles-based hip-hop outfit. Rock.
Things That Defy Categorization!
- Homestar Runner!
- It's somehow appropriate that this is the first link added to my site, as I've derived an absurd amount of delight from it. I can only imagine how much effort has gone into the incredibly funny animations the creators of this site have come up with. Start with the "StrongBad E-mails" menu, and choose "Dragon." Go on, you know you want to.
- Astonished Head! By My Friend Ian.
- My friend Ian is brilliant, prolific, hilarious, dark, and a master with words. I don't always agree with him, but I am always interested to hear what he has to say.
